We really enjoyed our five nights at Castello di Montegufoni on an off-season group deal in late November. The staff were lovely, both the day lady and the kind, helpful evening keeper. The castle itself is a huge, beautiful historic compound, unlike anything I've seen in person. It felt authentic and rustic, not polished or modern like a "Disney" experience. We stayed in a warm, comfortable, clean two-bedroom villa beside the castle. It had high ceilings, a nice kitchen, and big windows overlooking the Tuscan countryside, with a different feel from the castle itself. The information explained that this wasn't a conventional hotel with the same services, so we came prepared to be self-sufficient. We were glad to find toilet paper, soap, wifi, and cooking and dishware. The on-site restaurant was closed for the season. There were a few good places to eat nearby, but they required a drive and weren't practical to walk to. The two little grocery shops in the village also always seemed to be closed when we needed them! lol. Before leaving, I took a dip in the crystal-clean pool, though the water was icy cold. The reviews are mixed, and I can see how the room, season, and expectations could affect someone's experience. I hope to come back someday. Grazie mille!🙏

We were nervous about visiting Italy in the off season, but renting a car made this Christmas trip for our son and grandson into a memorable week. (December 2025) We drove around Tuscany and Florence, and also went to Pisa, Rome, and Verona. There was quite a bit of driving, but we saw SO much of Italy. Each day felt like an adventure. Only one day was overcast and we had no rain. We wore jackets and layers. Our room was just below the castle rather than inside it, but the castle was open for exploring. The staff were fantastic and kindly stayed late for our arrival. The photos were taken in winter, and I can only imagine how incredible it must look in spring and summer.

DO NOT RECOMMEND. Staying in a castle sounds like a kid's dream, but this isn't a place I'd recommend to anyone with a disability. It lacks safety and basic amenities.

The castle is very old, so there are some small age-related issues, but those didn't bother our group. What did bother us was the lack of services at such a beautiful place. Most guests spent time at the pool, and it would've been nice to buy food or drinks in the afternoon, but the bar doesn't open until 17:30. Given the remote location, being able to buy breakfast would also help. The bedroom was missing basics like toilet paper, and the fans need replacing. They were extremely necessary in the region's summer. The well-kept castle has amazing views and a lot of history, and those were the highlights. I don't think we'd come back.

This was our third stay, and we loved every moment again. The castle is full of charm and historic character, with incredible views and lovely, helpful staff. We ate at the restaurant most nights because the food was so good, and only wished it were open for breakfast and lunch too. Our room was spacious, and choosing one with air conditioning was great. Since the castle is self-catering, we drove 10 minutes to shops, including a co-op, for essentials. We brought our daughter, and her cot had a comfortable mattress and nice bedding. The staff also provided a highchair at a good table height, which made eating easy for her. We'll be back again soon.
