Hotel Suite Ares

The 24-hour desk was a real plus, especially these days with unreliable airbnbs. It’s also a decent little hotel. Honestly, I’d give it four stars just for being 30 steps from the world’s best pizza at Pizzeria Passionamij.

For my five nights there, I had no complaints about the hotel or the staff. The room looked like the pictures, was clean and well stocked, and the AC worked perfectly. Everyone on staff was friendly and great. You should expect some noise in a town centre, but the location suited me well, with lots of lovely cafes and bars nearby.

I emailed management the next day with a full account of what happened and some ideas for handling it better, but they never replied. That lack of follow-up makes me worry another guest could run into the same issue. On arrival, the night staff hadn't properly checked us in. Then around 1 AM they called us to deal with basic procedures that should've been taken care of earlier. The staff member turned it into an unnecessary argument instead of sorting it out calmly, and we felt stressed and unwelcome.

The reception staff were the bright spot. Both men were friendly, helpful, knew the area, and made us feel welcome. The location was good too, about a 15-minute walk from the train station and near the famous pizza place. Breakfast was another story. As soon as the woman working there realized we spoke only English, she was rude. She warmly greeted other guests with “Buongiorno,” but brushed us off with “What’s your room number?” The sign said to ask staff to make coffee, but when we did, she pointed us to the machine and told us to make it ourselves. Italian guests got coffee made for them at the bar. She ignored our table all through breakfast, even when my mom tried waving her over, and the next morning she ignored my mom again and gestured at the machine. It felt like she didn't want to help us because we didn't speak Italian, and we left feeling frustrated and unwelcome. Our room was okay, but the mattress and pillow were hard and the nights were cold. Otherwise, it was fine.
