Napoli's Gold Hotel

Updated review after the owner’s response: We arrived around 4:30-5pm, well after the 1pm check-in time, so that can’t have been the reason. Our flight didn’t even land in Naples until 4:15pm. The pillow wasn’t taken from the linen cupboard. We were in the room when staff came to make the bed and asked for a spare. The man told us to take one from the other bed, which would’ve left someone else without a pillow. He then showed us the linen cupboard and there weren’t any pillows there. In the end, I had to use towels as a pillow. Original review: We booked a triple room, but when we checked in, there were only two beds. We were told the third hadn’t been put in because it had been raining, which I didn’t understand. When it was finally brought in, there was no pillow for it. Getting to the room was confusing. We found an intercom with a lot of different businesses listed, got buzzed through a metal gate, then came to marble stairs and a very old wooden lift. We had no idea what floor the hotel was on, but it’s the second. When we asked at the front desk for a pillow, a man was on the phone and ignored us at first. He opened a random linen cupboard, showed us there were no pillows, and said he didn’t even work there, so he didn’t know where they were kept. The room smelled very damp the whole time and was cold. There was no soap in the bathroom, and although we asked, we weren’t given any. The taps and toilet also brought up an awful sewage smell. I wouldn’t recommend this room. The only positive was the price.

After hours outside, I gave up and had to find somewhere else to stay. I arrived at 4:30 on Monday afternoon, but nobody answered the building buzzer or the door of the 'hotel'. A passerby let me through the gate around 5, and I waited at the entrance, thinking staff might be handling something inside. Still no answer. The phone numbers on the signs and Google didn't work either. I was left stranded in Napoli without the room I'd already paid for or any way to contact the hotel. Reading other guests' comments, it seems the owner blames customers instead of taking responsibility. I can't see these problems improving, so avoid this place. Absolutely awful, a complete scam. I'd give it no stars if I could.

We left in the middle of our first night and found another hotel, but they refused to refund the second night. I was seven months pregnant, stuck in a hot, moldy room with broken air conditioning. On arrival, no one was there to check us in. We waited outside in the heat with our suitcases for 45 minutes while trying to reach reception. The room smelled of mold, and with nobody on site, there was no one to help when the air conditioning failed. Scam, avoid at all costs. A horrible, misleading experience.

The famous pizzeria is just around the corner, and my family had a good one-night stay. The welcome was warm, especially from the smiling lady at reception, and the staff were kind and friendly. We did have trouble figuring out where to stop for the valet because cars were parked all around the building. Luckily, a car pulled out of the only empty space just before us. Check the entrance before you visit, or you may be puzzled.
