Relais sul Mare

The junior suite’s view of Mount Vesuvius was worth the price, and we had a very pleasant four-night stay in March 2025. The hotel has only seven or eight rooms, so the breakfast and restaurant area are small, but there was a good mix of sweet and savory choices. Staff were attentive, and the room was cleaned properly each day, though not everyone spoke English. The interior is nicely done, and the location is superb. The one thing I didn’t like was the elevator: it’s small and slow, fitting one or two people without luggage. We never had to wait for it during our stay, which wasn’t peak season. Before the trip, I’d read the old bad reviews and nearly canceled. I looked for another place, but by then the 24-hour cancellation window had passed. A cab driver told me the hotel had changed owners during the pandemic and been renovated, so many of those poor reviews were about the previous ownership and old interior.

The location is good and breakfast was decent, but I wouldn’t say the room or its partial sea view justified the price. There are several better hotels on the same street for the same money, with nicer views and service. After a really tiring journey, we had to wait until after 3:30 pm to get into our room, even though check-in normally starts at 3. The previous guests had checked out late. When we asked the woman for keys and some information while waiting, she was rude and sarcastic, saying the room had a bed and a shower. Obviously.

The traffic and beeping on the busy street carried on all night, so light sleepers might struggle. Still, the location worked well as a base for touring southern Italy. This was our first hotel on our Italy trip. The room was incredible, with a large private jacuzzi bath, a balcony overlooking the bay where we could watch the busy street, and a big comfortable bed. The bathroom and TV were great, too. The staff were really nice and waited for us when we arrived late at night.
