We stayed at hotel Rettifilo for one night last month. The location was superb, with shops, simple restaurants and cafes everywhere, and among the places we visited in about ten Italian cities, this was easily the best value and quality. Our “junior suite” was a lovely corner room with a balcony on each side and a modern look. The shower had coloured lights, though it didn’t drain properly. Angela sent complicated instructions for getting into the property via WhatsApp, but that was fine. There’s no staff on site, but they’re easy to reach on WhatsApp and replied straight away. There’s also a shared kitchen with a kettle, coffee maker and fridge.

We stayed for two nights on the fourth floor. The room was clean and very nice, with a really comfortable mattress. The bathroom was large and modern, though toiletries were limited to shampoo/gel. The mini fridge in our room didn’t work, but there was another fridge and coffee in the common area. It’s close to the train station and a bus stop, with a stop for the “hop on, hop off bus” nearby too. Pizzeria da Michele is a five-minute walk away. Just know the lift costs 10 cents until 8 p.m.

Angela made everything easy, replying quickly to my messages and giving us all the information we needed. She even let us leave our luggage for a couple of hours after check-out, which gave us more time in Naples before heading to the airport. Thanks for that, Angela. We’d definitely stay again and recommend the place to family and friends. We spent four days at Rettifilo and had a great time. The accommodation was neat and nice, and we felt very safe there, especially travelling with a small child. It was quiet, the mattresses were comfortable, and the AC was a blessing in the summer. The location made it a short walk to shops, restaurants and the train station.

The bathroom soap dispenser was always empty, so they supplied small shower-gel sachets instead. There wasn’t even a shelf in the shower for bottles of gel or shampoo if you bought your own. We booked a week through booking.com, and at first the place seemed nice. Then the room fridge, which was advertised, turned out not to work. We were told to use the shared kitchen fridge, but someone kept switching it off, and a lot of our food spoiled. One time the maid threw away some bottles that were still half full, and a few pieces of gum went missing too. It seemed odd, but I let it go. At midnight one night, we came back and our key to the main gate no longer worked. They’d changed the lock without telling us. I called, messaged on WhatsApp and wrote through booking.com, with no reply. The WhatsApp message wasn’t read until almost 7 a.m. We only got back inside because another person came along with the right key. In our room we found that a pack of expensive candy we’d bought in Sorrento to take home had been opened. The worst part happened on our last day. The shower wasn’t draining, so I messaged the manager right away and sent a video. She said a plumber could only come the next day, and that my wife and I would need to get towels and dry the floor ourselves. I told her the clogged drain wasn’t our fault and we weren’t going to clean up the water. She then said she’d send someone to take care of it. We went out to see the city, expecting it to be sorted by the time we returned. Instead, with no warning, booking.com emailed to say the reservation had been cancelled and we had to leave. The manager didn’t answer my call. When I rushed back to the hotel, she said everything was fine, we could stay until the next day, and we should watch our hair around the drain. My wife had washed her hair only twice that week and always brushed it first to remove loose hair. That doesn’t seem enough to clog a drain. They hadn’t even checked it, but blamed us. I later realized why they’d “cancelled” the reservation: now booking.com lists it as cancelled, so I can’t leave an honest review there. I have never had such horrible service in my life.

Angela, the owner, was wonderful and easy to communicate with. All the details were clearly provided on booking and WhatsApp. The boutique hotel is conveniently located within walking distance of the central train station, where the airport bus arrives. There’s a large kitchen where you can eat Naples’ incredible food or make coffee or tea in the morning. Cleaning happens daily and the towels are changed. For trips to Amalfi, Pompeii or Ercolano, the train station is close by. Buy the Campania Artecard and install the Unico Campania app, and you’re set. The stay was amazing value for the price.
