I could hear every footstep from the apartment above, and whenever a group arrived or left, the thin ceilings and walls let all the noise through, day or night. Getting help was difficult too: staff didn't reply to calls or texts until the afternoon before checkout, and there were no instructions for using anything, so I had to figure it all out myself. The sauna was only open in the evenings. I never saw staff operating it, there were no directions for turning it on, and I couldn't get it working. The central heating took 36 hours to start warming the place and rose by only 2-3°C a day. I had shifted my stay by two days and told the host I was happy to change apartments if that helped. They moved me to one without a washing machine and didn't tell me beforehand.

We booked two nights at Castello Cabiglio, arriving on the Saturday before Whitsun. After paying extra for a suite during booking, we were told on arrival that it was already occupied. Instead, we were offered "Studio 5" at La Posteria, in a village five minutes away. It was a tiny room with a fold-out sofa. When I objected that we'd booked a suite, I was told the place was full and suites weren't available to guests like us because we booked through the third-party provider "Smartbox". They said suites were "much more expensive". This is a criminal organisation. Don't be taken in by the positive, probably bought, reviews. Book somewhere else.

We could walk straight from our room to hike or ride in the Campo di Fiori. Penthouse 7 worked really well for three adults and three young kids, who loved the place. It was beautiful, cozy, and well sorted, with good furnishings for eating and drinking in. Service was prompt and professional.

We booked four nights but left after two. We arrived at 9 at night as arranged in advance, and the beds weren't tidied. Five of us had just one blanket, there was no one around to speak to, and the room was still in the same state when we got back from our day trip that evening. We'd called in the morning to ask for more blankets and for the room to be tidied, and were promised it would be sorted by the end of the day. They hadn't even added toilet paper. When we asked for more, they told us to go buy it ourselves. The service was appalling. Later they claimed we'd broken the refrigerator, but luckily we had taken pictures of everything before leaving and realized we were dealing with crooks.
