I Dammusi di Punta karace Pantelleria

Bad weather cancelled the boats to Pantelleria, so we couldn’t travel. The owner marked us as a no-show, cancelled the booking, refused to change the dates or refund us, and kept the full amount before renting the room again. We were offered a 250 euro voucher for a future booking made directly with him, less than a third of what we paid for the cancelled stay. Then he claimed he had “lost out,” despite having our full payment and re-renting the room. I’ll never book or stay with this owner again. I can’t recommend him. Be careful paying in advance unless you’re certain you can get there.

The Pantellerian scenery is so peaceful, and the sea views and sunrises are enchanting. Mr. Francesco welcomed us and took care of what we needed. The kitchen had everything, though a microwave would have helped with takeaway, and for a week’s stay it would be nice to have fresh bathroom towels. Our diesel Panda struggled on the steep climb up to the Dammuso, so a petrol-powered Panda would be better.

Francesco picked me up at the hydrofoil, then took me to the airport to collect my rental scooter. He even brought me back to the airport later because my suitcase wouldn’t fit on it. I stayed five days at the dammusi of Punta Karace, which are well placed for Kamma and Tracino, and for the Tramontana, Levante, and Arco dell'Elefante coves. Everything was clean and tidy. In the evenings I listened to the wind moving through the ficus and oleander leaves, with the passing cats for company, especially Micina, the chatty blonde. I recommend the dammusi of Punta Karace and hope to return someday. Valentina

We had a very positive stay, helped by the setting, which is away from the bustle of the towns but still convenient for getting around. From the eastern side, the high position gives you a breathtaking view over some of the island’s best sea scenery. The dammuso is full of character, and its big veranda is lovely in the cool evening air. The main room is spacious and comfortable, though the other two are more basic: both are small, one has bunk beds, and the other has no windows. There’s a pool in a small shared area. I think it’s cleaned once a week, so leaves from the surrounding plants build up.
