PALAIA in Paterno, near Pelago, is a peaceful place among lush vineyards. The rooms are spacious and spotless, and the whole setting makes it easy to get away from the bustle and enjoy nature. A lovely, authentic Tuscan retreat.

The setting is magnificent, though it’s tucked away, so follow the owner’s directions carefully on the way in. The owner is helpful and attentive. There are three separate accommodations, each with several bedrooms and a private bathroom for every bedroom. The garden is beautiful, there are two huge pools, and kids have games to play.

We spent New Year’s Eve here with a group of 15, and the place was magnificent, with plenty of room for a group our size. The kitchen was fully equipped, and the owner was truly kind. Her attentiveness made the stay feel special.
