In the second week of February 2026, during low season, we found Varenna quiet in the early morning and later in the evening. Day trippers from Milan started showing up around 9am and were leaving by 7pm. The room had a balcony and a partial lake view, and its facilities were enough for us since we spent most of the day sightseeing. Both the ferry terminal and train station were a five-minute walk away. Bar La Tosca is attached and served good food from very early until late.

We were out exploring Varenna and the lake most of the time, and the hotel is within walking distance of the sights. It’s a good deal for a stay here, especially with the complimentary breakfast, which was really good. Our room had a partial lake view, and the bed was clean and comfortable. Check-in went smoothly, the receptionist was helpful, and the train and ferry stations are about five minutes away.

The location is ideal, which makes the rest of this a real shame. After 8pm you have to check yourself in, but there are no signs showing the hotel’s name, and the door has a different name on it. Someone will answer the phone, but nobody comes to help. I barely slept. The mattress springs marked my back on the first night, so I lined it with pillows for the rest of my stay. The walls are so thin you can hear people sneeze. I also felt a bit lightheaded and dizzy in the room at times, and on the last day, while packing on the floor, I noticed black mold under the window. The price may have been lower, but it wasn’t worth the sleepless nights or feeling unwell. A decent bed matters.

Breakfast had loads of choice, including more than 5 fresh squeezed juices, and the staff were happy to suggest nearby cafes and restaurants. The stay was very good value. It’s also only 5 min from the train and ferry stations, and there’s a lift for luggage, a nice surprise.
