Monaco di Mezzo

The location is wonderful, and the old country residence gives you an authentic Sicilian stay. Our room was lovely, the pool was clean, and both breakfast and dinner were excellent. Take care on the road up, though. We’d use a 4x4 and personally wouldn’t drive it at night.

I only stopped for lunch, so I can’t speak to the rooms. I’d called the day before and was the only lunch guest, but they still looked after me impeccably. There was far more food than one person could finish, from a full aperitivo through primo, secondo, dessert and fruit, all high quality. At €30, that was very good value. The service was lovely, and they gave me a short tour when I asked. The access road is in very poor shape, unsuitable for low cars, and not one I’d recommend to a weak or inexperienced driver.

The road up the mountain was dangerous, the playground was wrecked, and the pool was green and dirty. Inside, the rooms felt dark, old and dirty, with hard, worn beds. We came expecting a peaceful week, but after 30 drunken Russians took over, there were fistfights, a mobile disco and drunk racing on the mountain roads at night. It was insane. The owner did nothing, then got drunk and partied with them. We left after two nights and lost our money. Don’t go here.

The staff were very nice, but the place itself seemed old and in pretty bad shape, like it needed an overhaul. Our room was clean, though small, and the bed was the worst part, with no top mattress. Breakfast was so-so. We skipped dinner, though other guests recommended it. Since we visited in October, off season, we couldn’t enjoy the pool or outdoor areas because it was too cold. The roads to the Agriturismo were full of potholes. Our Fiat 500X made it, but I’d have preferred a jeep.
