Park Hotel Paradiso

The room was quiet, spacious, very clean, and had a comfortable bed. Staff were accommodating and spoke some English, and there was plenty of off-street parking. Breakfast was included, though the choices were light. Dinner was tasty and filling, and the price included wine and water. There wasn’t a menu on the night I stayed. The staff were kind throughout, and for the price, we felt this was very good value compared with other places on the island. My family and I spent two nights at the PHP. We’d read mixed reviews and hesitated, but a phone call put us at ease with the staff’s manner and answers. It’s a very large complex that has clearly seen better days and must be difficult to maintain. Still, we had a pleasant stay. The rooms were huge and very clean. We weren’t bothered by a small mark on the wall or the dated Jacuzzi. What mattered more was comfort: the beds were great, the cotton sheets clean, the pillows much better than the awful ones you often get in hotels, and there was plenty of room to move around. We had the hot pool to ourselves. Some dishes weren’t very hot, but the food was tasty, good quality, and served in generous portions. The grand, personally kitsch sculptures and decorations near the entrance weren’t really our concern. We cared more about comfort and weren’t disappointed. From our experience, some earlier reviewers seemed to expect top luxury while paying an average nightly rate. For what you pay, you get a lot.

That entrance looks grand and beautiful, but the rest of the experience was awful. My room had a horrible sewage smell. Dinner was nothing special, and breakfast was much worse: stale bread, completely dried-out croissants, cold tea and coffee, and flies on the meat and cheese. Drinks were far too expensive. The staff were very unfriendly, and I’ll stop there about the woman at reception to keep this polite.
