The setting is wonderfully quiet, with lovely gardens, a playground next door, birdsong, and even glowworms on our last evening. We took the Porrettana railway in, and the station is about a ten-minute walk away. We missed the place as soon as we left. The hotel feels like stepping into another era, with lots of prewar and postwar furnishings and decorations. It dates to 1929 and is still run as a family business; everyone we met was kind and helpful. The current manager and chef has adjusted the menu to include vegetarian and vegan options. Breakfast comes with the very reasonably priced stay and was generous and tasty. Dinner was the highlight. We tried the full Italian half-board meal on our first night, then ordered à la carte on the others, which was easier on both our budget and our waistlines. The homemade pasta and second courses were very good, as were the antipasti and desserts.

The rooms were clean and had everything we needed, and breakfast came with far too many good things to choose from. The cats and the host's sweet little kid made the place feel very homey. We arrived at 11 at night even though we were meant to check in at noon. The host still greeted us with a smile, helped with parking and showed us to the room. Since we had to leave early, she explained the coffee machine and even set a table for us that night. She was lovely throughout. I only wish we'd had longer, it was a great stay and I'd happily recommend it.

If you're driving, leave by retracing the way you came and park in front of the hotel. Don't take the downhill road beside the parking area, our car got stuck there and it took an hour to get it back. The owner had told us to use that exit, so please don't direct other guests down it.

We stopped for lunch and loved the beautiful, charming setting. The food was delicious too. I'd gladly recommend it.

The place is clean and charming, the beds are comfortable, and the atmosphere is lovely. Elena’s cooking is great, so be sure to eat there!
