Agriturismo Santa Chiara

We were very disappointed with our stay. We'd booked mainly for the pool, but it was out of service. When we tried to talk this through with the hosts, we found they spoke only Italian. On arrival, we were shocked to see a rabbit confined in a tiny cage with no food or water. It was so small the animal couldn't even turn around. A little later, we saw a dead rabbit lying in a wheelbarrow in the blazing sun. The conditions we saw were unacceptable. There was hair in the shower as soon as we entered the room. The toilet and refrigerator weren't properly clean, and there was no hand soap and only one roll of toilet paper. Perhaps more supplies could have been provided, but the language barrier meant we couldn't ask. Breakfast was included, but what we were offered was mostly packaged supermarket pastries, with no fruit, eggs or cheese.

The peace of the Tuscan hills and the view across to Volterra made this feel like a true agriturismo, with animals, a vegetable garden and a pool. From the children to the grandchildren, everyone in the family was so kind, and guests are constantly made to feel cared for. Mr. Lionello was delightful, and his wife cooked wonderful dinners and fabulous breakfasts using fresh ingredients. We'll definitely return. Daniele and Veronica from Rome

The peace here is hard to describe. You can look out over huge fields and gaze at the stars in the evening, while staying in very spacious rooms that are really mini apartments. Lionello and his fantastic wife welcome you warmly, and she's a wonderful cook. The Tuscan food is healthy, excellent and plentiful. Add in the charming stories told in a catchy accent and all the authenticity, and it's a timeless farmhouse I'd happily return to on our next Tuscany trip. The only downside is you'll probably leave a few pounds heavier! 😊😊😊

If you want a relaxing place to chat in the evenings, this is a great fit. The owners are fantastic, always kind, thoughtful and cheerful, and the food is consistently good. The owner isn't a cook, but still turns out generous, delicious dishes! I have food intolerances, and they did everything they could to make me comfortable when I told them. I'll be back, and I'll miss their company and food.
