This was our fifth year in a row visiting Villa Ottone. In past years, the service and experience were outstanding, but this time the quality and professionalism had clearly slipped. The waiter didn't explain the menu theme, which had always been part of the experience before. We were also told everyone at our table had to order the same kind of cocktail because only two bartenders were working and making different drinks would take too long. For a place of this level, that felt unprofessional. When I politely asked to see the mezcals, the bartender couldn't describe how they differed, even by flavor, and rather arrogantly pointed out that the cocktail would cost more. That wasn't acceptable to say to a guest. The aperitivo used to be generous, but for twelve people we got just two small portions of olives and two portions of nachos. The usual tigelle with mortadella and pistachio were gone, so tiny pieces of toasted bread were served instead. The “Franciacorta a Pois” cocktail was also unavailable because preparations were missing, which seemed surprising on a Friday night in peak season. The “Tommy’s Margarita” was poorly made and presented, and the Piña Colada came without garnish or even the usual pineapple touch. Villa Ottone used to offer a distinctive experience, but this time we didn't feel like valued guests, just ordinary customers passing through. We've always chosen the place for the overall experience and travel widely. Having worked in hospitality, with standards shaped by cities like London, I don't think this level of service matches the prices. It's sad to see the decline after previous years, when the waiters and bartenders were so attentive, kind, and professional.

Villa Ottone felt like its own secluded little world, and was perfectly unique to Elba. My fiance and I had such a good time that we didn't want to leave. We explored the island by moped and looked at the other 5* properties. Their buildings were newer and the beaches a little sandier, but they were much busier and could have been anywhere. At Villa Ottone, the property, food, private beach, staff, and charm made this one of our favorite island stops. We stayed in a small, older room in the main building, but the views and character more than made up for it. Ten out of ten.

The beach was nice when the weather cooperated, and the service and food really do feel five-star. The rooms don't match the five-star label, though. I just wish drinks weren't 16 euros each.

After a hectic week at the Palio di Siena, which we're lucky enough to attend every year, Villa Ottone gave my husband and me an Elba kind of island magic, tenfold. From the moment we arrived, we were already keen to come back next year. The staff, facilities, property, service, and atmosphere were all second to none. Grazie mille a voi per un’esperienza top!!

The only thing I'd improve is the gym. We found one in Portoferraio instead. We spent four nights at Villa Ottone, and the room, pool, and grounds were all really great. The food at both restaurants was great too. I'd stay here again.
