On a walk through Ragusa's historic center, Palazzo Bertini is an easy place to recognize and a recommended stop. Its three façade gargoyles make it one of the city's most distinctive civic buildings and an original example of Hyblaean Baroque. Built in the 18th century, it pairs elegant proportions with expressive carved faces that reflect the era's creative, symbolic style. It’s lovely to admire from outside and take time over the details. The reliefs photograph especially well in side lighting. An iconic building that gives the city's architecture plenty of character. Palazzo Bertini, an 18th-century building just behind Piazza Matteotti, now houses a hotel. Its façade is most striking for the three gargoyles above the first-floor balcony windows. One is a carefree beggar with crooked teeth, another a proud nobleman representing power above the law, and the third a merchant associated with wealth and splendor.

May 18, 2025: On our walk down from upper Ragusa to the lower part of town, we passed Palazzo Bertini. It’s known in part for the three heads set above its first-floor windows.
