Our stay turned into 10 hours of hell. Around 11 PM the power went out, and Ostia Holiday never answered the 24-hour phone number on their business card, even after we tried again and again. With no electricity or air conditioning and our phones nearly dead, we finally left at midnight and ended up on the street with nowhere to go. There aren't taxis, Uber, or anything similar in this village. We found another hotel, though it cost a lot more. The next day we returned the keys and asked for our money back. The “CEO” became very unfriendly. They had promised a refund for the first night through booking.com, but we've never received a penny. Here's how we got there: when we checked in at the reception near the train station, the address on the keys didn't match the place we'd booked. They told us the original had a water leak and the substitute was just as good. We walked over, although it clearly wasn't by the beach as our booked place was supposed to be. It turned out to be an ordinary apartment with numbered, lockable bedroom doors. Our room hadn't been cleaned after the previous guests, and the whole place felt like a battered frat house. We asked reception for a full refund since this wasn't the room we'd reserved, but they showed no flexibility. booking.com, where we'd made the reservation, was no help either. Back at reception, they still wouldn't refund us, but offered a better place called “the pent house.” They said we'd wait about 15 minutes for an employee to drive us there, tried hard to sweet-talk us, and even offered drinks from the bar next door. We stood outside in 38-degree heat for an hour and a half before they finally took us. The second apartment was ordinary too, and still a long way from the beach. At least it had just one bedroom, so we didn't have to share the kitchen and bathroom, something we hadn't expected to do anyway. After a very long day I tried to shower, but the water kept swinging between freezing cold, enough to give you brain freeze, and burning hot. There was no comfortable setting. Avoid this host, Ostia Holiday, at all costs. It's a real estate company renting separate rooms in apartments as if they were hotel rooms, not a hotel. And honestly, I wouldn't go to Ostia at all. It felt like a spooky movie set in a place that might have been nice in the '80s.
