The village and its history made the whole stay memorable. Just a short walk away is the archaeological park of Ostia Antica, once an important port for ancient Rome. There’s so much to see there, from the museum and its finds to sarcophagi and amphorae, tombs, gates, homes, shops, temples, baths, the theater, and the black and white mosaics. It feels like stepping into life 2,000 years ago. I’d recommend it to anyone who loves art and history. The castle village itself is full of history, with Roman stamped bricks, Latin tombstones in the house fronts, bits of marble and travertine, and columns set into the cobbled pavement. It’s a peaceful place with the imposing castle commissioned by Pope Julius II in the early eighth decade of the 15th century, and the basilica dedicated to Sant'Aurea, which tradition says was already there in the 8th century. Its windows still show beautiful Gothic decoration and clear signs of age. We stayed at The Locanda del Passerotto, in the attic of an old house inside the fortified medieval village near Ostia Antica. It has single and double rooms with ensuite bathrooms. The rooms were clean, spacious, comfortable, warm, and welcoming. The bathroom, with a shower, is on the same floor as the rooms. The owners were kind and always available to help. TV, Wi-Fi, towels, and bath sheets were included. Breakfast starts at 6:30 a.m. in the restaurant downstairs in the same building. The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner too, and it’s a real gem. There’s also a covered seating area in the little outdoor square. I want to thank Agnese, Benedetta, Amina, and Mauro for their genuine hospitality during my stay in Ostia Antica. Thank you so much, and I hope to see you again soon!

We only ate at the restaurant. The older lady was welcoming, and the lasagna, both the classic and artichoke versions, was good. But our waitress was terribly unpleasant and close to rude, while seeming much nicer to the Italians at the next table. She actually threw our plates at us. The food came out cold and was rushed onto a serving plate, while the nicer dishes went to the next table. If we're such a bother, we won't come back.

The house dates back to the 15th century, which is pretty cool, but paying over €170 for two nights of B&B didn't feel worth it.
