Piccolo Hotel Ariston

It took just five minutes after we arrived for the place to feel like home. I want to thank the owner and her ex, who has been helping her this year, for their kindness, smiles, and readiness to help with everything. Don’t come expecting a luxury hotel. It feels a little like stepping into the past, in a good way, where kindness and calm are what matter. The rooms are a good size, spotless, and tidy. Lunch and dinner were well prepared, with meat and fish choices every day, and the food was good quality. Cross a small road and you’re at the beach. I really hope to come back soon, it’s well worth it. Thanks for everything.

I came back from June feeling properly rested, so I can see myself staying here again next year. San Mauro al Mare is, to me, the quietest spot on the Riviera Romagnola, and the little Ariston fits right in. The owners are warm and ready to help with requests, and the food is another reason to return: fresh, good ingredients, cooked the traditional way, with fish or meat made to order each day. Our room looked straight out to the sea, and I think paying a little extra for that view is worthwhile. The side rooms have balconies and a nice peek at the water too. The beach is just across a peaceful road that closes to cars in the evening. It’s a three-star place, so don’t expect luxury or a brand-new building. Still, it feels welcoming as soon as you walk in. The rooms are roomy and comfortable; ours had no shower, though the bathroom itself was a decent size. The town is quiet and doesn’t have much going on, but busier Gatteo and Bellaria are a short walk away.

We’re back for our second year, and the location right by the beach is a big plus. There’s a special deal with beach club no. 8. The rooms are clean, and breakfast has plenty to choose from, both sweet and savory. Lunch and dinner are à la carte. 💯

For a very competitive price, you get that old-fashioned Romagna feel, with all its good points and shortcomings. The hotel is practically on the beach, and the people running it, who also founded it, have kept it going for 60 years. Don’t come expecting a pool, entertainment, or technology. It’s simple and courteous, with a homely feel. They call you by name, serve traditional food, remember what you like and how you do things, and the owner may stop at your table for a quick chat. It reminded me of the Romagna we knew as kids, growing up in the 1980s. Recommended.
