The town was mostly deserted, though it did have a good nightclub. The setting itself is nice, with blue sea, but there’s no beach and a concrete platform inside the marina. We rented a small house from the Blave family for five people, paying €25 per person. It had no air conditioning, washing machine, or TV, and the sun beat down on it. After two days the drains clogged, and they blamed us. The owners were around and intrusive all week, and had double keys. At lunchtime they confronted us and refused to leave, despite our having rented the place for a total of €800 for one week. It turned into a huge argument, and we didn’t even get our deposit back. They also refused to issue a receipt or any document confirming we had stayed there. The whole thing made this the worst vacation of my life.

The one good thing was the sea, which is uniquely beautiful. The rest of the holiday was horrible. I stayed in a small villa in the Torre del Mito complex with my sister and three other kids. On arrival, we found there was no television, air conditioning, or mosquito nets. The owners, Federica Blave and her parents, were vulgar, unreliable, and rude. They charged us €150 for bathroom damage without an invoice, though we kids weren’t responsible for it. I was most upset by the lack of privacy, and on the last day they kicked us out while we were still having lunch, with repeated vulgar language. After four years of vacationing in Salento, this was the first time I’d felt humiliated. I have no intention of taking another vacation in this country.
