Villa di Tissano

We stayed overnight in a spacious, clean, simple room with a lovely terrace, and it made a nice base for exploring central and southern Friuli. The villa is charming, run and worked in by a real family, and the Italian style garden is beautiful. It has quite a history too, with the King and queen of Italy having stayed here during IWW. Dinner was good from entree through dessert, served by excellent staff at a candlelit table in part of the huge garden park. The restaurant does gourmet dishes, and though I personally think the chef could do more creatively with FVG's excellent, distinctive sea and mountain produce, that's just my opinion. The Paccheri with tomato sauce and other elements cost 16 euro, which felt a little high, but it was so good I forgave the price. In general, the prices seemed in line with the quality, service, and setting, not cheap but not especially expensive either. The same family also runs Casa della Contadinanza, a unique restaurant on the top terrace inside the castle of Udine. It’s worth a visit for the fantastic food, huge Cantina of wines, and historical setting.

For a few days in Friaul, this is a great place to stay. Villa di Tissano has a beautiful garden, very nice rooms, and a restaurant serving typical, delicious food. The manager and staff are friendly and helpful.

The big, beautiful terrace stood out for me. This old family castle has been renovated as a hotel and restaurant, and staying there really feels like stepping back into old, old times. Such a nice place.

We felt like locals here, thanks to the seafood and the staff, who made us feel so welcome. One of our favourite spots in Venice.
