The Castle of Santa Severa is a historic site on the Tyrrhenian coast, about 50 km north of Rome. Much of the castle dates from the medieval and Renaissance periods, including its 14th-century fortress and large 9th-century 'Saracen' tower. People have lived at the site since the Bronze Age. Popes and noble families used it as a retreat for centuries, but under the foundations lie the remains of Pyrgi, an ancient Etruscan port city. Before the castle existed, Pyrgi was a busy international trading hub connecting merchants around the Mediterranean. Rising sea levels have submerged parts of the ancient port. Surveys underwater have uncovered a complex maritime landscape with old jetties, villas, marble columns, and burial grounds, along with tufa blocks and a marble sarcophagus about 30m offshore. It's well worth seeing. The museums are excellent, detailed, good value, and very well curated. You can also take a nice walk along the beach around the castle and enjoy the views up and down the coast.

This was our last sightseeing stop while we were staying in Rome, and it was beautiful and worth seeing. I wish we'd had more time to explore it all. With the nice beach next door, it could easily fill a whole day. Bring water shoes if you're not used to walking on rocks.

There's plenty to do here: spend some time in the castle, then take a walk along the coast. Much of the castle is free to visit, while museum tickets cost 8 euro for adults, and the museums are worth a visit. On the castle grounds there's an interesting private alchemy museum, where entry and the tour are by donation, as well as artisans with beautiful handmade creations. A bar and food area is near the castle, and there's a small restaurant nearby on the beach.

The shared guest area was handy, with a kitchen, books, soda and coffee machines, and free Wi-Fi throughout. We spent a couple of nights here and loved the setting, though getting around can be awkward since it’s a living museum and some areas are closed off or need a ticket. Nobody speaks English, so you have to manage pretty independently. Next time I’d love a sea-view room or a balcony. Still, it felt magical and was well worth experiencing.

We’ll remember this beautiful stay for a long time. The castle sits right by the sea, and our room had a balcony with a breathtaking view. It was so quiet that all we could hear were the waves. My family and I loved it, and we’d recommend it to everyone ❤️
