Erzherzog Johann

The food was excellent, and the team took care with food intolerances. Everyone, from the restaurant staff to housekeeping, was friendly and did a great job. We had a thoroughly enjoyable holiday in Schenna at Hotel Erzherzog Johann and would happily book it again. One thing I’d change is the room location. Ours faced the parking lot, where bus traffic and the school made it noisy when we slept with the window open.

The apartment itself was lovely, and we had a pleasant stay. Its owners live in the building and were friendly, and we were able to use the hotel facilities. We were satisfied with those, though our use was limited to the pool and spa. What spoiled the experience was trying to pay the apartment bill before leaving. Our landlady said we could go to the hotel and settle it the day before departure, so I went to reception. I waited ten minutes with nobody there. A sign said the desk was generally staffed from 7:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., but there was no bell or note saying someone would be back. Guests waiting at the bar also eventually gave up and left. I followed a loud conversation into an adjoining room, where a large group was having lunch, and asked whether anyone knew how to get reception’s attention. A woman came over, looking annoyed. I said I didn’t want to interrupt their meal, just wanted to ask for the receptionist. She replied, “I can’t be everywhere at once.” When I explained I needed to pay the apartment bill, she said there was no record of it. She tried to reach someone, then brought her husband, apparently the owner. He also said there was no record and picked up the phone. I offered to come back later, but he said, “Wait, everyone’s already jumped up.” The woman seemed just as irritated. I left without paying, and nobody told me when to return. It felt as though getting back to lunch mattered most. I found the whole thing very unpleasant, and that’s the impression I’ll remember. For a 4-star hotel, it was surprising to find both reception and the bar unattended while staff were eating, with no sign to explain it. The owner’s complaint that everyone had to “jump up” for me made it worse. I can’t speak to the rest of the service, but this experience really stayed with me.

The outdoor pool was wonderful, tucked away in a quiet spot with a magnificent view, and there were plenty of loungers. The restaurant, terrace, and bar all felt cozy, and the espresso machine made delicious coffee. Meals were great too, and the little playroom was a nice extra for children. Our family room was very spacious, bright, clean, and well equipped, in a quiet part of the hotel, though its style was a little dated. The hairdryer didn’t work and really needs replacing. Staff were friendly and professional throughout. We thought the price was very good for what we got, and we’ll be back. Thank you! 💐

We’ve been coming to the Erzherzog every year since our first stay in 2018, and by the time we leave we’re already looking forward to the next one. It feels like a holiday with friends. The Pichler family runs the hotel into its second generation and is actively involved. Our rooms have always been spacious, clean, and supplied with what we need. The balconies facing Mutspitze are especially lovely, with a wide panorama and lots of sun. Staff are consistently capable, efficient, and friendly. There’s a welcoming bar and mountain-view terrace, plus a fitness and wellness area with a sauna, whirlpool, indoor and outdoor pools, a tennis court, and more. Everything is in excellent condition. Breakfast and dinner have plenty of choices, with a strong regional focus. See you soon!
