Hotel Garnì Ongaro

The view from the room is gorgeous, and the rooms are kept clean. They’re simple, but that works well if you’re mostly out exploring. The owners are helpful and really nice, and the price is affordable.

The only easy positives are the location near the Church of Santa Fosca, the ski resort and the Santa Fosca cable car. The surroundings are beautiful, but I wouldn’t stay here again, even if it meant staying farther from the slopes. I’d tell others to choose somewhere else. Our room smelled musty, and there were bugs in the bed. The dining area also seemed unclean, and the continental breakfast felt like food from earlier days had been reheated or reused. The garden was billed as a place to relax, but looked like a neglected front lawn and felt awkward and uncomfortable. Service made the stay even worse. Staff were unfriendly and often rude; some of the attempts at politeness came across as fake. A few interactions also had a nasty racist edge, which made us feel unwelcome. The Italian and German platitudes on the walls seemed to point to a lingering fondness for the Nazi era. I was shocked by that. The hotel had been highly recommended, so I can’t help wondering if management changed or staff left in large numbers. The whole place felt as if it were going downhill, whether from budget cuts or a lack of care. I don’t expect luxury, but basic cleanliness should be manageable.

I stayed here a few years ago and still remember how welcoming everyone was. The reception staff were especially courteous and went out of their way to help us find food and entertainment. They even tracked down people who spoke English and Arabic. A beautiful place with people who appreciate good people, and I’d definitely recommend it to anyone who wants to enjoy both.

We felt really free here, like we shared the staff’s respect for nature, wildlife and human life. They were so kind to us, and the view is stunning. Everything was clean, too.
