Hotel Astor

We spent a week at Hotel Astor on a ski trip, and had a fantastic stay, unlike what some earlier reviews had led us to expect. The room was a good size with a lovely view, and the location worked really well: Lift Nives is a two minute walk away, and Ciampinoi is just down the hill. Doris and her family were a pleasure to deal with, always stopping for a friendly chat when we got back in the evenings. The rooms were comfortable, the staff friendly, and all the information was clearly communicated before we arrived. Thank you for a wonderful week.

We wouldn’t recommend Astor Suites in Selva after this stay, mainly because of the owner/receptionist’s unfriendly and inflexible manner. On our departure day, our taxi wasn’t due until 16:00, after a full day of skiing. We understood a late checkout might not be possible, but when we asked to leave our bags somewhere or use the wellness showers later, both requests were refused. Instead, all seven of us had to leave our belongings in a smelly ski storage room and use it to change, which was unpleasant and inconvenient after skiing. What upset us most was how rudely the refusal was handled, not just the refusal itself. We’ve travelled together for over 35 years to ski destinations in Austria, Switzerland, France, and Colorado in the US, so we’re familiar with resort hospitality. We’ve never come across such an unwelcoming attitude.

The location is great, the rooms are fine, and breakfast is okay. It’s a pity, because the basics are there for a pleasant stay, but the receptionist, who also seems to be the owner, made every interaction feel like an interruption. Hospitality seemed optional, and the service deserves a category of its own called “How Not To Run a Hotel.” This was a one time stay.

Breakfast was a frustration, with very few choices, poor quality food, and nothing fresh. The room and facilities were just as disappointing: outdated, badly maintained, and not properly cleaned. There was no refrigerator, the furniture was old and worn, the bathroom looked neglected, and basic amenities were missing or barely worked. We never felt comfortable and felt we’d paid for far less than we got. For a place claiming to be four stars, this was unacceptable. It felt careless and misleading, and the price was terrible value. We left frustrated and cheated, and would strongly recommend avoiding it. There are much better options in the area that actually care about guests.
