Residence Lago Sila

There are lovely forest walks behind the hotel, and our room looked out over the lake. The setting is beautiful, but it’s very remote, so bring a car since public transport is almost nonexistent. The room smelled awful when we arrived, like it had been smoked in with everything shut for decades. There’s a €100 cleaning fee, yet the room wasn’t serviced and there was no dish soap or cloth. Apparently guests are meant to bring their own cleaning supplies. The lift stayed out of order all week, with no sign of repairs, and we saw an older woman struggling on the stairs with a crutch. The hotel is basic and rustic, so don’t expect luxuries. Shower water was usually lukewarm at best; late at night or early morning seemed the best chance of getting it hot. There’s a large entertainment space downstairs where people can dance late. The dancing itself didn’t bother us, but guests coming back and talking loudly every morning did.

Paulo at the front desk was so kind to my family. He pointed out good places in the area and was always cheerful. He also looked after us during food service, which was very good, and the food was lovely. Thanks to Paulo and the whole team, and to the people in town who greeted us with bon giorno or bonasera.

Nothing was open, including the restaurant and the other facilities. The place felt dark, dingy, and depressing. The manager was unfriendly and kept our deposit, making up costs that weren’t real. Avoid it.
