The flat is in the best part of Ortigia, which is a shame because with a little money these problems could be fixed. We couldn't really use the balcony because the air conditioning unit takes up half of it. Our Aretusa flat was the only one with someone living above us. For most of our holiday, there were two adults, three children, and a dog upstairs, so the noise was horrendous and we hardly had any quiet time. When we arrived, we had to pay 50 euros as a damage deposit, refundable when leaving. We immediately went to the hotel in Syracuse, a 30-minute walk away, to report the many missing and damaged items because we worried we might be blamed. There were no TV or air-conditioning remotes, kettle, iron, or ironing board. They gave us two remotes, an iron, and a kettle, which we had to carry back to the flat. The toilet wouldn't flush, and the seat was damaged and dangerous. The flush was repaired that night, but the seat was never replaced during our 14-day stay. A louvre was missing from the window, though we found it in a drawer and put it back. The fridge door compartment was missing, so bottles had to lie inside and took up food space. Cooking for ourselves, which was why we booked a flat, was difficult. There wasn't enough crockery or cookware, the frying pan was tiny, and there were no wine glasses. There was no information in the flat. We had to pay 75 euros for cleaning, far too much for one room and a bathroom. During the 14 days, our bedding and towels were never changed, and there were no facilities for doing it ourselves. The 32-inch TV only had Italian channels and no Sky dish. We didn't eat at the Lungomare Cafe below us, which had Sardinian Warbler on the menu.
