Au Lac de Como Campground

We stayed for a week in July and August. It was cheap, basic accommodation, but more than enough as a base for exploring Como, Milan, and the Dolomites. The pool was clean and nice, and we hired kayaks and used them. The evening food was buffet style and lovely, especially the seafood. You have to book it in advance, which meant we couldn’t change our minds later. The staff were friendly and helpful. They didn’t know what gin was at first, but by the end of the week they did 😂😂 The epic thunderstorms were a bonus, since the WiFi was poor.

The views and location were the reason for our two stars. You can camp beside the river mouth, with spectacular scenery of the surrounding mountains and the start of the lake. There’s plenty of space and green areas, almost like a park by the river. A small beach and large field are right by the site, along with a café where you can sit outside. There’s also a pool, supermarket, and restaurant. It was quiet while we were there. Warm showers and WiFi are free, and the WiFi works in many parts of the site. Wooden huts are available too. Some sit just behind camper vans but still have nice views, while another is farther away and gives you more privacy than at other campsites we’ve seen. The relaxed kitesurfing spot by the surf school is only a 4 to 5 minute walk away and visible from the campsite. JC Surf School is right next to it. There are a lot of downsides. The showers and toilets were clean, which was good, but old. The main facilities are at the far end of the campsite, a few minutes’ walk if you’re staying by the lake. The toilets and showers near the lake are all together in a small, old shed. You can hang clothes and towels on the swinging doors, but there are no separate facilities for men and women. Once you step out of a cubicle, you’re outside with no extra building around it. Dishwashing is outdoors too, either along the wall behind the restaurant, behind the sanitary building, or in the middle of a field beside the toilet and shower cabins. It’s nice enough when the sun’s out, but in the rain you get soaked. The same goes for getting out of the shower in rainy weather. The owner came across as grumpy and rather unfriendly whenever we saw him, and we heard others say the same. I also overheard a discussion where guests who had arrived were denied the discount they’d been offered. You need a bathing cap for the pool. The facilities generally seem worn and old, like the owner doesn’t want to invest in the campsite. Without the lovely river mouth views, the good location, and the nearby kite spot, we’d definitely choose a different campsite. We don’t think it’s good value for the money.

The people are all really kind and the service is very good. I fell in love with the place. The houses are simple, but they’re in good condition.

The location seems good, and it’s a fair deal, so I’d come back. I only tried the breakfast, not an overnight stay. It was decent, but nothing special, so I’m just the breakfast guy :D
