The rooster calls from the garden started at 4 a.m., though those little creatures weren’t to blame. What made the five nights much harder was that our two rooms stayed freezing, even after I told the woman about it right away. Sewer work, as the gentleman explained, also left an unpleasant smell throughout the rooms, bathrooms, entryway and stairs. Cleanliness was appalling. I found other people’s hats in the shower on the first day, and my roommate found nail clippings on the rug beside her bed. The tap water was reddish at first, then clear but smelly the next day. No housekeeping was done during our stay, and the Wi-Fi in my room was too weak to use. The gentleman himself was kind, courteous and quick to help with requests like fresh towels or more toilet paper. The front door was difficult to open, so I had to call him to let me in, but he was always available. Before leaving, I told him about the problems in person and he apologized.
