The food is excellent, and I’d happily recommend the place. I spent two days at the hotel and liked its quiet, slightly remote setting, which gives it an authentic feel. The rooms are cosy and old-fashioned in a nice way. You can hear people in the next room because the walls aren’t soundproof, though that’s true of plenty of hotels.

It’s quiet and surrounded by greenery, pleasantly secluded while still close to Subiaco. We enjoyed both breakfast and dinner. If the restaurant is closed, at least on Mondays, Contrada Rapello is very close by and worth trying. The Grotta dell Arco is also impressive if caves are your thing.

After travelling extensively around Italy for 15 years, we came away disappointed with this agriturismo. The welcome wasn’t especially friendly, and most of the dinner main course was inedible. It was also rather expensive.

The directions were the one tricky part: our GPS sent us onto a dirt road running beside the correct one, which seemed to share its name. Leonardo kindly came to find us, and the signs pointing toward Colle Tocci are the ones to watch for. Once there, we found a comfortable place in the Lazio hills above Subiaco, a peaceful base for the Anniene Valley or a break from Rome. Leonardo and his family were warm and welcoming. Their restaurant serves traditionally made pasta using fresh ingredients from the farm, at great prices. It’s a lovely way to experience the quieter, charming side of Italy away from tourist menus and crowds.
