The route from Tarvisio to Grado is the best-known and easiest part of the Alpe Adria Radweg. It covers roughly 165-170 km, mostly downhill, and is particularly suited to cyclists. Much of it follows old railway embankments, is paved and separated from car traffic. The ride goes from the Italian Alps, the Julian Alps, down to the Adriatic. From Tarvisio to Venzone is about 60 km, descending through the Fella River Valley among high peaks. The most striking stretch has many restored viaducts and former railway tunnels. The next section, Venzone to Udine, is around 50 km and reaches the Alpine foothills. Venzone is an atmospheric town rebuilt after an earthquake, and Gemona del Friuli is a picturesque place worth a stop. The last leg, Udine to Grado, is about 55-60 km through flat farming and wine-growing country. Near the coast, the route passes historic Palmanova, a star-shaped fortress town, then crosses a long bridge over the lagoon to Grado.
