At 5 pm on a Sunday in late June, there wasn’t much to choose from: the fridge was empty, so no ice cream, and the display case had nothing sweet or savory. There were only small bags of chips, and the drinks fridge was half empty. I’d come back only for coffee or a cappuccino, and only if I wasn’t hungry.

The food is good, the staff are friendly, and the price is excellent. I give it five stars across the board, with the place’s context in mind. When you go to Schiaparelli, city-center comforts aren’t what to expect. I’d recommend it to people who focus on eating their food, not photographing it.

The restaurant was a highlight for us. The tagliatelle with hare sauce was excellent, and we had a great time there. The campsite itself is peaceful and green, run by three young women who were friendly and helpful. The pitches for campers aren’t marked off, but there’s plenty of room, even to maneuver a large vehicle. The cabins are mostly wooden and laid out thoughtfully, without getting in the way of campers. The tent area in the beech woods is lovely and not far from the bathrooms. The bathrooms are spacious and clean. During COVID-19 they were separated for the campsite, restaurant and hostel. Access to them is level, and inside there were no issues. For people with mobility disabilities, the main difficulty is the downhill path to the camper area. It’s the pebbles, rather than the slope, that could make wheelchair access difficult. One thing that could be improved is water access. If you park a camper near the restrooms, you need to run your own hose through the window. I’d suggest the managers look into this, since it seems like a small fix. I’d happily return if I’m in the area again.

The restaurant is the best part for us: excellent ingredients, local dishes, fair prices, and friendly, helpful staff. The site is shady and really quiet, especially at night. We’re always travelling with our kids and dogs, so that peaceful setting works very well for us. This was our fourth visit, and each time we leave wanting to come back. The camper pitches could use clearer boundaries and leveling. Finding the c/s is a bit of a treasure hunt, and electricity columns don’t reach every part of the area.
