Treviso turned out to be a great choice for visiting Venice without staying amid its crowds of tourists, and Palazzo Bortolan was a great place to stay. The old town and station are easy to reach, and the train to Venice takes 30 minutes. We had a large room in an old Italian mansion, with a vaulted wooden ceiling, traditional furniture, and very comfortable beds. All the staff, though there aren’t many, were terrific.

The traditional building is beautiful, the location makes everything easy to reach on foot, and it was quiet in the evening. The staff were lovely too. Our room, though, was worn and needed a good scrub. There were little ants, and the plastic seals on the shower doors were completely yellow-brown and looked like they hadn’t been washed properly in a while.

Our room was lovely, with a huge bed and a top-rate bathroom. It’s in a beautiful palace overlooking a canal, just a 5-10 minute walk from the historic center. Treviso is a medieval jewel but still feels lively, with beautiful churches, architecture, art, plenty of restaurants, and stylish shops.

We got there late at night after I’d told the hotel when booking that our flight arrived late and that we needed a late check-in. They accepted the reservation and charged my card, then suddenly said they couldn’t accommodate us. When I asked why they had taken the booking and payment if they weren’t prepared to check in guests, the reply was incredibly rude: “Do you understand? If your flight arrives late, you should not have booked with us at all.” I complained to Booking. The hotel’s response only reinforced the disrespect I experienced. I wrote one honest review about what happened, and did not “pretend to be other guests”; that accusation is false and offensive. Yes, Booking may state the check-in times, but I notified the hotel in advance about my late arrival because of the flight schedule. They accepted the reservation, charged me, and then refused to provide the room. That is the problem. A professional administrator would offer a solution, or decline the booking. If it had been accepted by mistake, they should apologize and return the payment. Instead, guests get blamed, accusations are made up, and money is kept for a service that wasn’t provided. That’s unprofessional and unacceptable. This was the worst experience I’ve had in all my travels across Italy, and the reply only confirmed that. Strongly not recommended. You risk being left without a place to stay and without your money.
