Among the narrow pedestrian lanes, this one can be hard to find, but it’s worth the effort. It’s impressive that the Arc has survived intact through the ages and is now part of modern Triest. There are other hidden gems around the city center too, so take a stroll and you’re sure to come across them.

It may have been one of the gates leading to the Forum farther up the hill, in the Roman colony of Tergeste, founded by Octavian in 33-32 BCE, before he became Emperor Augustus. Another possibility is that it served as a gate to a sacred site dedicated to the Roman goddess Magna Mater.

A must-see, whether you’re a tourist or a local. This marvelous original Roman sight once brought to mind the Republic, and no, not Italy’s, Rome’s. It’s fully accessible, with a 'buonissimo' local restaurant of the same name nearby.

This ancient Roman arch stands on a small square surrounded by buildings, hotels, and cafes. It’s surprising to see it built into a modern building on one side. The Roman Theater ruins are nearby too.

It’s tucked away in an alley, but worth a stop to see and even touch a bit of Trieste’s history. This is said to be one of the city’s oldest architectural remains, along with the ancient Roman theatre, and it’s amazing that it’s still visible. There’s a bar right beside it too, so you can stop for a Spritz.
