The bathroom turned out to be shared by three or four bedrooms, despite being described as private. I wouldn't have stayed if I'd known. The booking was originally through Booking.com, but Maria Stella contacted us and offered to arrange the night for €95, half the original price, payable in cash on arrival. When we got there, she presented a €245 bill, saying the city was busy and she'd raised the rate. Asked why she hadn't mentioned that by email, she told us to book somewhere else, even though everywhere was full. We refused to pay that much; she came down to €200, but we only had €140, which she eventually accepted. It felt like a shakedown, and the warning signs were there when she first got in touch. A man in the next room had the same thing happen to him.

The house is lovely and peaceful, and our room was spotless and really spacious. The hosts looked after us like we were their favorite people, and their recommendations were great. Such a nice way to get an authentic Italian experience.

The owners were incredibly caring and welcoming. They even drove us into town several times and pointed us toward some great restaurants. The yard and houses were beautiful, and our room was roomy, clean, and very cozy. After a long Interrail trip around Europe, we all agreed this was easily our best stay. We already feel we need to come back for longer.

I hadn't come across this kind of grape before. Their own wine, which they produce and sell, was flowery and sweet, a bit like Merlot. The hosts were very welcoming and friendly. I'd happily return.
