Hotel Stella D'Italia

The view was breathtaking, but that was the only real bright spot. The room had quite a bit of dust and a spider web beside the bed, and we felt ignored at the restaurant. On our first evening, we waited about 10 minutes to be seated, then another 20 or so for a menu. The website doesn't make clear that you need to reserve a table. The worst part started before we even arrived. We called ahead and were told to phone again at the last train station. When we did, they gave us what seemed to be a public transport timetable, without explaining that it wasn't the hotel shuttle or telling us a bus number or how to use it. We ended up waiting four hours for a shuttle that never came. After a long journey, that was incredibly frustrating and avoidable. When we finally got there, all we got was a quick “sorry.” Nobody tried to fix the situation or make us feel welcome. They didn't even offer us a glass of water after we'd been stranded for hours because of the hotel's information. The lack of care and hospitality was shocking. Mistakes happen, but the way they handled this one is what stayed with us. A casual apology didn't make up for losing four hours of our holiday, and we left feeling unwelcome and disappointed. We wouldn't stay here again or recommend it.

The room and shared spaces were spotless and so well looked after that you'd never guess this was a historic hotel. There’s a small covered garage for paid parking, and a public lot just a few steps farther away. The outdoor areas are gorgeous, especially the dock by the lake. At dinner, the chef made amazing food, and we felt truly cared for throughout our stay. The breakfast staff were lovely and helpful too. The two women who checked us in were especially welcoming and clearly knew their jobs. This was the most beautifully put together, authentic hotel we stayed in on our trip, with the best service.

The views and location are fantastic. Rooms feel a bit dated, and the friendly, enthusiastic breakfast staff seemed short-handed.

We were amazed as soon as we walked into the room and saw the lake view. Breakfast was nice, too. It's a pet-friendly place. The little garage was full when we got there, but you can park in front of the hotel or in a lot about a two-minute walk away.
