Rifugio Grassi

The dinner was so good that, whether it was the cooking or how hungry I was, I ate the whole set menu without leaving a thing. The shelter makes the most of its space with beds, so comfort is limited, but that feels fair in the mountains, where you give up a little comfort for other, deeper experiences. It has the feel you hope for during a hike. The staff were very nice, especially one man who asked about our plans and destination. With the next day's forecast looking poor, he strongly advised us to wait for more reliable information before setting off. Getting caught in a thunderstorm high in the mountains can be dangerous, and sometimes plans need to change with the conditions. We made the right call. The next day we got completely soaked, but we were going down to a village at the foot of the mountain, so it was fine: no danger and not much walking left. In that situation, getting wet was still okay. Otherwise, it wouldn't have been.

The people were wonderful, and the food was great. I definitely recommend it.

Lovely people, a great location, and a really nice place.

Anna and Amos are the refuge keepers, and their patience and hospitality are hard to beat. They stay calm even when people make all kinds of rude or unusual requests. There’s a good variety of food, it’s very tasty, and the portions are generous. I was glad I could help by carrying something over from the jeep parked in Blandino, near the Tavecchia refuge. I highly recommend hiking from Introbio to the Grassi refuge without taking the transport service. Anna and Amos deserve a hand.
