Palace Grand Hotel Varese

We've always felt at home in this historic hotel and are glad to see the care going into preserving it while bringing it gently into the modern world. We'll be back soon. The restaurant has become very good and inventive, though it can feel surprisingly empty in the evenings. Perhaps a half-board menu would bring more guests in, since it's a shame to see those lovely dining rooms so quiet. The rooms themselves are clean and well cared for, with very spacious bathrooms, even if the furnishings look a little dated. I also like that the imported Chinese toiletries are being used up and replaced with Italian products. The hotel sits in a large, leafy park on a hill, with beautiful views of Lake Varese and the surrounding hills, including Sacre Monti di Varese, the UNESCO World Heritage Site. There are old, huge trees, a nice pool, and plenty of quiet corners for reading. The walk into the city center is manageable, but the route becomes unpleasant once you leave the grounds. You can use the hotel's shuttle, drive from the ample parking, or take the public bus. Inside, there are generous public spaces and a lovely staircase. Staff are attentive and kind, especially at reception and Manuel, the head waiter.

The staff are what really make this place, they're warm, helpful, and welcoming. The hotel itself could do with some updating, though the rooms are comfortable and clean despite their old-fashioned look. Being up on the hill gives you lovely lake views, especially in the morning if you choose a lake-view room.

The building is more than 100 years old, but it's kept in great shape, clean, and has amazing views. I loved the classic style, especially the life-size porcelain dogs on each stair landing, such a fun touch. The staff are lovely, down to earth, and really service minded, and breakfast is both beautiful and delicious. Sound carries between rooms, which makes sense in an old building but is worth knowing if you're sensitive to neighbors' noise. Still, I wouldn't change a thing about our stay.

Varese is a safe-feeling town with plenty to explore, including interesting local museums and attractions. We found good restaurants at reasonable prices and the locals were friendly. The hotel itself is atmospheric and historic, set in spacious parkland and kept in good condition. Staff were charming and courteous, especially Dominic at the bar. Breakfast was generous and good quality. We came in November and both the room and hotel were warm and comfortable.
