We weren’t staying here, just looking for a quick lunch in the village, and this was possibly the worst meal of our holiday. We waited a long time for a table, then got bland soup and pasta, the worst versions of those dishes we’d had on this trip. We hadn’t expected anything fancy, but the short ribs and cod stew were both inedible. The waiter saw that we’d left almost everything and heard what was wrong, but did nothing. The restaurant manager also listened, calmly took our money, and seemed surprised that we thought the food was bad. Other diners were complaining about both the wait and the food, so I don’t know how she could act as if this was news. She even managed to inflate some prices on the bill. We paid over 100 euros for a disgusting meal. Serving food this terrible should be a criminal offence.

Dinner was a highlight: we ate in a breathtaking 16-century dining room, and every course was delicious and reasonably priced. The cocktails are outstanding too. Fabio led our private wine tasting and cellar tour, and his knowledge and experience made it a great visit. We spent one night in the Foresteria annex and had a superb stay. The property is gorgeous, and our room was spotless, comfortable, and fairly priced. It’s ideally placed for exploring Alba’s rolling vineyards, just a short drive from Barolo. I’d happily return and recommend the hotel to anyone visiting the area.

The setting is beautiful, but the service was awful and the food mediocre. Our reservation was for 7:30. We were offered a drink at 8, saw the menu at 8:15, and only got our order taken at 8:45, after someone in our party went in to ask about the service. The appetizer arrived at 9:20 and the meal at 9:50. Again, we had booked for 7:30. The food was bland and cold, and the bill was very high, including 10 euros for tap water. Maybe the extra charge was for being left alone to look at the view while waiting with an aching stomach. The night before, we’d had an exquisite local meal for incredible value. Lesson learned: places advertising themselves as fancy may ignore you, treat you badly, and deliver nothing. It felt like they were robbing us for tourist industry profit. A miserable experience.

Breakfast in the green oasis garden was a lovely start to the day. At the restaurant, the food was delicate and tasty, made with local ingredients, and the wine produced by Castello di Verduno was a good pairing with dinner. It’s an amazing place to stay in the Piemont area. The village is ringed by vineyards, and the hotel room windows look out over beautiful countryside.

The rooms are clean and nice, and the staff are friendly and ready to help with just about anything. There’s a beautiful garden and terrace, and the location is perfect. Everything feels so luxurious that I don’t understand why it isn’t a 4-star hotel. If you’re into wine or food, it’s a great starting point for exploring the Barolo area. You even get to sleep in an authentic classic wine castle.
