The hilltop setting gives you a lovely view over Vernio, and there are plenty of trails nearby for well-trained hikers. The apartments and little houses are in annexes beside the main house, with a pool for a swim and space to relax over local food and drinks. The owners are warm and generous, offering fruit and vegetables from their farm and selling their olive oil and honey on site. Vernio has a few restaurants, bars, shops, and a supermarket. It also makes a handy base for day trips to Lucca, Florence, Pistoia, and Siena.

After a rainy day cycling, I arrived completely soaked and got such a warm welcome from the owners. They served me a lovely dinner, and breakfast the next morning was just what I needed to set off again. I’m very grateful for their kindness.

The hosts were so warm and friendly, and the setting is beautiful, with a large pool looking out over the valley and Vernio. If you’re after an authentic taste of Tuscany and Italy, this place is a great fit. Highly recommended.
