The staff were friendly, the place was fairly clean, and breakfast was included. The cappuccino was good, too. But there was a strong cigarette smell around reception and the breakfast area, and the room felt dark and boxy because of its awkward layout and window placement. There was mould on the bathroom walls and ceiling, and we ran out of toilet paper. The TV was tiny, mounted really high, and only had Italian channels. Next door, the building work was so loud we couldn't hear it. It would've been nice to know about the work beforehand.

The location is the big plus: Albergo Al Castello is only 0.2 km from Piazza Brà and the Arena, with Juliet's House and Piazza delle Erbe within 0.5 miles. It's on a quiet side street, yet right in the middle of everything. The family-run hotel is in a charming liberty building, and it has had recent renovations, but its 2-star limitations still show. We stayed in Room 19. It was just about spacious enough for two adults and basic luggage, with a nice view of the Castello and the street. The cooler worked well and the bed was comfortable. The bathroom was very tiny, with a stand-in shower. Toiletries were okay, though I'd bring my own. Wi-Fi was free across the property and the speed was decent. We didn't eat or drink at the property, so I can't comment on that. There's no gym, pool, or other recreational facility on site.

The staff are so kind, they make the place feel like a real family hotel. The location is incredible, though Via Cavour can get a little noisy sometimes.
