After a long, tiring trip, we needed help figuring out a late check-in, but got nowhere. My fiancée and I had an unexpected delay and emailed the owner in English to say we’d arrive after 9 p.m. She replied in Italian with a curt message about the terms: no room that night, come the next day, or cancel and lose the money for the remaining days. She also kept pushing us to cancel the rest of the booking and pay the full amount. I even called while running between planes, but she didn’t understand a word of English, and apparently couldn’t speak any other language besides Italian. Booking.com staff tried several times to help, but couldn’t get through to her, and then she stopped responding. She says she’s spent over 17 years in tourism and served thousands of guests. I’ve worked in hotels and tourism for 15 years, and I’d never treat a customer that way. We had no other accommodation lined up, and I was hoping for some guidance, especially after all those airport connections. Instead, I booked a night at another central Verona hotel for what four nights at this place would have cost, thinking we could check in here the next day. We told her we’d come then, but she canceled the whole reservation anyway. We thought maybe this was just Italian hospitality, but fortunately found another place 30% cheaper, better, and with a young woman who spoke English fluently, just 50 meters from the Arena di Verona. She said we’d been grossly ripped off and that this might be grounds to report the property to the police, which we intend to do. The owner came across as rude, greedy, incompetent, and unsympathetic. If you’re considering staying here, think twice: there are plenty of better places closer to Verona’s center with more humane owners. It’s a shame to treat another person like this. Shame on you. Karma will come back around.
