You can walk to the crater in about 25 minutes and watch volcanic eruptions from there, with a magnificent view across the seven Aeolian Islands. The scenery is lovely. It's a village on a human scale, with black sand on one side and a beach with the bubbling hot spring, Soufrière, on the other. Evenings are mild and fresh, without the heat getting to you.
