We were writing this over breakfast after spending two nights here. Ms Joyce's Jamaican cooking, especially my favorite soup, took me straight back to childhood. The breakfast was lovely, and Ms Joyce and David welcomed us with open arms. The view from the rooms is delightful, and the place is nice to stay at, though the rooms have fans instead of AC. I'd recommend this retreat. It's 10 minutes from Falmouth center and Martha Brae, and a five-minute drive from 876 beach, or a 15-minute walk.

The best part of our two-night stay at Retreat Guest House was having real Jamaican food made by Ms Joyce. The jerk chicken and Jamaican breakfast were delicious, a real luxury. Ms Joyce and David were so warm and welcoming. 10/10.

The room was okay, but the owner seemed to charge extra for everything she could, including AC, the massage chair and soap, much like a budget airline. On top of the booking price, she insisted on another US$25 for government tax. I hadn't been asked to pay that at the five other hotels I'd used in Jamaica, and it felt like a ripoff. The place is remote. It's a 30-minute walk under the hot sun to reach the main road and a taxi. Otherwise, the owner charges US$35 each way to town, enough that you could find a better hotel in town instead. The internet was weak in my room. The owner wouldn't move me and blamed my phone, though it worked fine elsewhere. If you're okay with extra transport costs and no reliable internet, you may be fine. Otherwise, stay somewhere else. I also found a leech in the pool, which was really weird.

You can properly relax here, surrounded by birdsong in the morning and lovely sunsets. We spent a week, and it was conveniently close to a beach, which suited me since I'm not a pool person. The rooms are spacious, with vaulted ceilings. Ms. Joyce is an excellent chef, and she and her son David are warm and friendly. I highly recommend it as a retreat from a chaotic world, a place to relax and exhale.

David and Joyce were such hospitable hosts, and they even gave us an incredible homemade meal. Our room was beautiful and the views were lovely. We had an amazing night at the Retreat Guest House and would return in a heartbeat. Don't miss this hidden gem!
