Strawberry Hill

The mountain-top views are wonderful, and the place feels peaceful with nature sounds in the morning and evening. I also enjoyed the delicious local food and the educational gallery about Jamaica’s music, along with the owner’s eye for musical talent. The service was excellent. I’d definitely come back for a second trip.

I’ve stayed here before and still love the cottages, gardens, and authentic furnishings. Some details need attention: the drive up has terrible potholes and the property is poorly signed. The faded mural and the worn, torn upholstery on the guest waiting area bench also need fixing. Turn-down service was inconsistent, and the towels were faded and ripped. They should be nicer towels with the hotel logo. The pool ought to be heated by now. My drink tasted different each time, so I wondered what happened to measuring with a jigger. I can’t really call it luxury anymore.

I’ll return for the atmosphere and the views. The site is one of the most stunning places I’ve visited, and staying in Highgate or mount view villa gives you views of the city, Newcastle, and the surrounding mountains. The staff were very nice, and the food was fine. Drinks were better than okay, though not quite mixology. The bathrooms are run down, and the pool was gross, so don’t expect luxury. A platter of trash and dishes sat outside my room for 18 hours. Howling cats also woke me during the night.

My plans to stay at Strawberry Hill hotel changed suddenly when my elderly father was unexpectedly injured. I had to fly back to the US early to be with him at the hospital, and I contacted the hotel promptly, giving eight days’ notice. I’d hoped they might make an exception to the policy requiring cancellation at least 14 days before check-in. They showed no flexibility, and I lost the full cost of the stay, which I’d paid months ahead.
