We got to spend a day at this beautiful hotel, and it was perfect. The staff were wonderful, especially Hana, if I’ve got her name right. She was so kind and helpful, I can’t say enough. The Chef was great too :). I’d definitely recommend it!

We had complicated food needs because one of us was in the early stages of pregnancy. Head Chef Mr. Hioki (Mr. Hioki), who speaks fluent English, came to greet us and check every detail himself. He put so much care and creativity into the alternative dishes he made. The dinner and breakfast he prepared were the pregnant lady’s best meals of the whole trip. Our waitress was also incredibly helpful and spoke excellent English. Mr. Hioki also suggested we go see Hanamomo (peach blossoms) while it was in season. I’d been focused on historical sites and would have missed this seasonal sight without his thoughtful tip. This was a beautiful boutique luxury ryokan with heartfelt service. The property has a Taisho Romanticism (Taisho Romanticism) style, mixing traditional Japanese architecture with elegant Western furniture and a striking collection of glass lamps. The lobby lounge was a relaxing spot, with plenty of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, snacks, and ice cream available from afternoon until midnight.

The staff carried our luggage to the bus stop when we checked out, and breakfast had been brought to each room that morning. It was delicious. Even my niece, who usually eats very little, finished hers, and everyone was pleased. We could relax until it was time to leave. We rented Hirugami no Sumo Genchiku for our wedding party, and being there with our family and close friends was truly special. Our group was large, so we walked from the bus stop at Hirugami Onsen. It was raining, but the staff had towels ready for everyone as soon as we arrived, then welcomed us with tea and food in the warm lobby. Getting everyone to their spacious, comfortable rooms went smoothly. Some first-floor rooms had private outdoor baths. The water was a just-right temperature, warming us through and leaving our skin silky. Guests on the second floor used the large public bath. The indoor pool was big enough to swim in, and the outdoor bath had two levels, so we could pick the temperature we liked. Before dinner we had a soak, then relaxed in the cozy lobby with free drinks and a view of the autumn leaves in the garden. The staff were quick to help when asked, and otherwise gave us space. Dinner was a lavish meal centered on Nagano specialties, with especially memorable Shinshu salmon. They carefully accommodated the food restrictions of our international guests and explained the dishes in English. Since we had the venue to ourselves, it was decorated to our requests, including a beautiful floral arrangement. Our international guests were impressed by the flexible, heartfelt hospitality, as were the Japanese guests. After the banquet, people played board games in the lobby and had drinks at the bar. The private setting felt luxurious and relaxed, and several guests said they wanted to stay another night. We’d hoped to give family and friends with busy work and childcare lives a restful stay, and the inn made that possible. The rooms, facilities, food, and attentive staff made this a once-in-a-lifetime stay. I’d love to come back.

The hot spring water felt gentle on my skin, and soaking while looking out at the forest was a real treat. My kaiseki dinner used seasonal ingredients, carefully prepared course by course, and breakfast had mild flavors made with local produce. The thoughtful service and attention from the staff left a strong impression too. Genchiku, Hirugami no Sumo is a Taisho-era romantic-themed inn in Hirugami Onsen, Nagano, quietly set along the Achi River. The rooms are all different, with gardens and detached options that have outdoor baths, making for a stay that feels out of the ordinary. A nice choice if you want a peaceful visit with hot springs and good food.

It was my birthday, and my wife had secretly asked the inn to prepare a cake at the last minute. They brought it out singing “Happy Birthday.” I was embarrassed, but it turned into a lovely memory. Room number 4 was the most impressive ryokan room I’ve ever stayed in. The welcome, check-in, meals, and staff were all superb, and the private outdoor hot spring bath was amazing. I soaked so many times I felt like I was melting. I’d absolutely like to come back. Thank you!
