The food was fresh, well prepared, and hit the spot after a long day walking. My main gripe is that there are quite a few smoking rooms. I’d like to see more non-smoking options, perhaps with a separate ventilated area for smokers. The host was wonderfully kind. I arrived drenched after walking in the rain all day, and she handed me a key right away so I could get settled before dealing with check-in. That meant a lot. It was Golden Week, when places are usually booked up, but she still found a room that night for the fellow henro traveling with me, then arranged another room for the following night too. She really went out of her way to help us both.

We knew the place as "The Jubon" back then, and it was a solid hotel for our business stays. I’ve spent hundreds of nights there over the years, though it’s been about a decade since I last visited. It’s pretty spartan by Western standards, but has an authentic Japanese feel, and we were always treated well. This part of Japan is quite isolated and rural, which can be a nice break from the hustle and bustle of Tokyo or Osaka. I’m not sure what the average tourist would do here, but if you end up in the area, it’s a reputable place to stay.

The building and facilities aren’t new, but everything works well, and for the price there’s really nothing more you could want. We booked the same day as a walking Henro couple and were welcomed in. The bath and sauna were spotless, dinner was delicious, and we slept comfortably in a double bed. There’s a very clean coin laundry too, and we could wash our clothes during dinner. Our room had a fridge and TV, and the unit bath was bigger than usual. It’s a local hotel, and Ippon-no-matsu is such a cute town. Best ever for the price!

I spent a month there back in 2001, when it was still called Jubon Hotel. It was peaceful, and the people were nice, especially the farmers around there.
