Yamashiroya Ryokan

The managers were very kind and even let us bring our bikes inside the genkan, using bike stands built for that purpose. The place has traditional lodging, with warm bedding and really comfortable futons on tatami floors.

The food was so good I’d come back just for that. This Minshuku is run by a lovely, attentive family, and you can tell the owners put a lot of care and love into the place. Having our own bathroom and tub was fantastic. Such a wonderful family business.

The owner was very kind, and there’s a lovely massage chair that costs 100 yen. But people smoke inside, including in the rooms. The person in the room next to ours filled both the hallway and our room with smoke. The restrooms are also a bit of a walk from the upstairs rooms, down steep stairs.

After a day on the Henro trail, it was such a relief to find this level of hospitality. Meals aren’t available anymore, but I’ll always remember how kindly the owner gave us Ainan Gold fruit. Thank you!
