I’d rather sleep on a train. The beds feel like stone, and the AC/heater is disgusting, with dust and mold caked on it. Don’t stay here.

The rooms are small but nice. The front entrance is shut from 23:00-6:00, but you can still come and go through the side door.

There’s a supermarket close by and I spotted a few restaurants, so meals shouldn’t be a problem. The convenience store was too far for me, though, and I gave up on going there. I was traveling alone for work and had booked a roomy single. When I came in, there was a faint bad smell. I wondered if it was from the unit bath plumbing, so I poured shampoo into the bath, toilet, and sink, let it run down slowly, and opened the window before turning on the exhaust fan. That brought the smell down to a manageable level. If you’re after good value, this place is a decent option.

Ashikaga Town Hotel made a convenient base in central Ashikaga for getting around town and visiting nearby sights. It had a quiet atmosphere and the facilities I needed, so I could relax during my stay. Ashikaga School, Hōon-ji Temple, and the Taiheikikan Museum were all easy to reach.
