Metou Onsen Hotel

I paid 37,000¥ and ended up in a tiny room with a SHARED TOILET. Trip.com shows a HUGE RANGE for the Japanese room, 16-25 sqm, and even though the description mentions a “smart toilet,” you can still be given a SHARED toilet. I'm extremely upset. It's also really inconvenient, and the onsen setting was only so-so.

We enjoyed the dinner and the peaceful countryside atmosphere during our recent stay. Meto Onsen belongs to the society that works to preserve Japanese secret Onsen, nihon hidou mamorukai, and its old traditions. Last year, the trademark mixed rotenburo was changed to a regular bath separated by gender. A new rotenburo has since been added as the “new” mixed bath, but both genders have to wear rented clothing, so it doesn't feel much like the old ways. We heard another separate rotenburo is planned beside the river. I'm looking forward to seeing how that turns out.

The manager was polite and sincere, and he can communicate in simple English. He kindly drove back to the Onsen twice to collect the things we had forgotten after checkout. We're very grateful to him and to the staff for their high level of service. The place is peaceful and relaxing, with three outdoor onsens beside a river. The scenery is beautiful, the water is high quality and leaves your skin smooth, and the food is excellent in both quality and quantity. Great value for money.

It's closed on Monday, so don't make the trip for nothing 😔. The scenery is amazing, though.
