Minshuku Asogen

The owner and his wife were so friendly that they even gave us a ride to Cuddly Zoo when we checked out. The meals were absolutely delicious, and the hot spring facilities were well maintained. We hope to visit again someday.

June 2025. The property is next to the main road and is accessible by car, with ample parking. The road is easy to drive, as it's a two-way lane. In Japan, most drivers go at their maximum speed of 50 km/hr. Since this is a remote area, there are no shops around, so you'll need to drive to restaurants or a convenience store. The nearest supermarket I could find is very close to Aso Milk factory. There's no restaurant or meals. The room is about the right size, with a private toilet but no bathroom. Only four onsen bathroom are available, so you have to take turns if they're all occupied. It's an enclosed onsen, and a nice experience. There's usually no one at reception, so there isn't much interaction with the owner. If you need service, press a bell and they'll come over.

The food was excellent and probably the main appeal here. If you love beef yakiniku, you won't be disappointed. The room had everything you need, though the futon base would've been better if it were thicker. Service was great by Japanese standards. 10/10, I'd stay here again if I visit Aso.

I came by train this time, and the walk from the nearby station to the Ryokan took 20 minutes, so I'd recommend it to visitors who drive. The staff member was friendly and did his best to explain the facilities in English. The Ryokan offers both dinner and breakfast. We enjoyed the food in the early morning, and maybe we'll book dinner next time. The traditional tatami room was comfortable, clean, and warm. Since I was there in March, I enjoyed sitting at the Kotatsu（kotatsu), a table with a heater underneath. I also loved the private onsen-style bathtub outside the main building. It was perfect for anyone shy about using public baths.
